Licensed Social Workers

The Child Center began as a children’s counseling center, and a commitment to mental health remains at the core of everything we do. We employ social workers across program areas and in a variety of settings. Responsibilities include providing high-quality, culturally sensitive mental health services, and assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of clinical concerns. Our social workers help turn a troubled start into a bright path for some of our city’s most vulnerable populations, including the undocumented, children experiencing abuse, and families living in extreme poverty. Clinicians must have a master’s or doctorate degree in social work or counseling and New York State License/Certification.


Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors

Substance use disorders are a growing problem among many of our populations. Our CASACs provide direct counseling services—and hope—to teens and adults struggling with addiction. These professionals play a key role in fostering clients’ social, cognitive, and behavioral skill development. Treatment is provided in individual and group sessions. Groups are offered to address such issues as wellness, health education, stress reduction, life priorities, and addiction awareness. CASACs must be credentialed and hold a bachelor’s degree.


Youth Advocates

The Child Center operates more than a dozen afterschool sites where children continue to learn after the school bell rings. Equally important, we work to strengthen the social and emotional development of every student. Youth advocates play a crucial role in this endeavor. They provide one-on-one support to help students develop appropriate behaviors, acquire greater self-confidence, and achieve improved classroom functioning. They also facilitate workshops for the school community and serve as important mentors in students’ lives. Youth advocates are in college or hold a bachelor’s degree and have experience working with school-age children and adolescents.


Activity Specialists

An essential part of our youth development team, activity specialists are responsible for designing and facilitating project-based learning within a specialization, such as culinary arts or dance. They use their creativity and experience to engage students, families, and faculty and coordinate events in their specialty areas, such as showcases and performances. The encouragement and support activity specialists provide leave a lasting impact on students and help give them the confidence to pursue their own passions. Activity specialists are typically college students or graduates who have experience working with youth in their specializations.


Directors

For every program, there’s a director, responsible for all facets of a program, ensuring goals are met, sound strategies are in place, finances are in order, and both staff and clients are thriving.  Directors build key relationships with significant stakeholders, including funders, licensing agents, school and community leaders, parents, participants, support staff, and supervisors. Directors must be flexible, highly motivated, experienced, and detail-oriented professionals, comfortable with both administrative undertakings and serving on the front lines as a role model for staff and clients alike. Requirements vary by program, but all directors should hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have a minimum of five years of experience in their field.
