Staff Spotlight: Micki Segel

Micki Segel

On June 19, The Child Center of NY hosted a retirement celebration for Micki Segel, LCSW-R, who began working with the agency an incredible 32 years ago — before we were even known as The Child Center!

Most recently our Associate Director of Youth Development, School-Based Mental Health (SBMH), Micki has been an unfailing advocate throughout the decades for the children in her care, as evidenced by her blog post, Three Ways Schools Can Counter the Rise in Teen Suicide, and her comments in this article about the devastating consequences of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

Below is the farewell address Micki gave to colleagues at Queens Bully — four blocks from our administrative headquarters in Forest Hills and four miles from our South Jamaica (SJ) Clinic, where Micki spent the majority of her tenure with us. Thank you, Micki, for your hard work and dedication. You will certainly be missed.

Staff Spotlight: Q&A with Social Worker Ingrid Gomez

Ingrid Gomez, winner of 13th annual Peter Kuo Award for Social WorkMarch is National Social Work Month, a special time at The Child Center of NY, where social workers play an instrumental and inspiring role in helping young people who are facing trauma, mental health challenges, and other impediments to their ability to reach their full potential in life.

This year’s Social Work Month theme is Elevate Social Work, which embodies the need to recognize the extraordinary contributions of the social work profession to our society. We are grateful to the Queensboro Council for Social Welfare for taking this theme to heart every year with an annual celebration honoring social workers in Queens who exemplify excellence in their profession. This year’s celebration, which was co-sponsored by the National Association of Social Workers, NYC Chapter and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, was the 28th annual reception honoring the social workers of Queens. We are proud to announce that The Child Center’s own Ingrid Gomez, LCSW, Mental Health Therapist at our Early Childhood Program in Corona, was this year’s recipient of the 13th annual Fred Kuo Jr. Award Continue reading

Staff Spotlight: Diane Valente

Diane Valente, LCSW, Assistant Director of The Child Center of NY’s Woodside Clinic

At The Child Center of NY, we want the children we serve to have the support they need to lead fulfilling lives. That means offering them an array of programs that nurture them wholly, despite any setbacks due to poverty, language barriers, or behavioral health. It means being there for kids whose families or cultures have a hard time accepting them for who they naturally are.

Providing safe and nurturing environments in which children can speak openly with peers about the challenges they face is an important part of who we are, so at our clinics, we try to create opportunities for group therapy as well as individualized counseling. Safe Space groups are often the only method by which young LGBTQ clients can learn to cope with the difficulties they face and develop much-needed resiliency to ensure a brighter future. The Child Center employs experienced, culturally competent behavioral health staff to run these groups and often to work closely with parents of participants to ease their transition from therapy to home life.

We recently spoke with Diane Valente, LCSW, Assistant Director at our Woodside Clinic, who created and manages several support groups there.
