Thank you, Assemblywoman Rozic!

Assemblywoman Nily Rozic Steps Up for The Child Center and Our Parsons Beacon Community Center in Flushing

When 12-year-old Rose saw the big cardboard check for $25,000 from her local Assemblywoman, Nily Rozic, to the Parsons Beacon community center she attends for afterschool programming, her eyes widened and her body shifted forward in her chair. “That’s a lot of money!” she said. She immediately began thinking of all the things the center could do with the money to help youth like herself, and also her fellow community members of all ages.

Moving the Needle on What Matters in Social ServicesChild Center of NY Board Member Adam Schwartz and Family

By Adam Schwartz

I have been a part of The Child Center over six years, after having met Dick [Jay] at a “friend-raiser” in Manhattan in June of 2012. After hearing about the agency and the work it does for low-income and economically diverse children and families with little to no greater community supports, I knew I wanted to become involved in its work and its mission. The Child Center is dedicated to doing whatever it takes to help our children succeed in school. That’s why we’ve invested in efforts like in-school counseling and mentorship to ensure kids are socially and emotionally ready to learn.

We also make sure to address the practical things — like school supplies. Continue reading

Supporter Spotlight: Barbara Deli, M.D.

Barbara Delhi, M.D.

A Hands-On Approach

Barbara Deli has spent more than 15 years as an OB-GYN working with lower income and uninsured women and families, most recently at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Medical Center. A few years ago, after having twin boys Joe and Marcus, she decided she wanted to work less but find other meaningful ways to help this population. Her husband had found boards to join through the Robin Hood Foundation, so she sought recommendations and soon arrived at The Child Center of NY. Continue reading

Finding Your Voice: The Child Center of NY’s 65th Anniversary Gala

The Child Center of NY celebrated 65 years of service to some of the city’s most underprivileged children and families at our Annual Gala on May 14, 2018, at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. The event featured entertainment by Broadway stars (along with students of The Child Center’s performing arts programs!), and the honoree was acclaimed restaurateur and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich. Emcee Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View and a correspondent for ABC News, led nearly 400 guests through the profoundly moving evening. Continue reading

Supporter Spotlight: Jennifer Milacci

Ten years ago, Jennifer Milacci, then expecting her second child, was looking for volunteer opportunities that championed issues close to her heart. “I was drawn to organizations that helped children and families,” Milacci recalls, and that’s when she learned of The Child Center of NY. Milacci quickly became a board member, and, in the years since, her acuity in sales and marketing has come in handy for our organization.

We talked with Milacci about everything from her invaluable work on our Annual Gala committee to an upcoming shopping event at her own apartment to a particularly poignant memory of a dodgeball tournament that included her daughter.

How were you were first introduced to The Child Center of NY?
In mid 2007, I came to learn of The Child Center through the Robin Hood Foundation. Robin Hood had a process by which they introduced individuals interested in potentially serving as board members ‎to their underlying grantee organizations, of which The Child Center was and remains. My Mitzvah Project

Adam Donowitz used his Mitzvah project for his Bar Mitzvah to donate to The Child Center of NYBy Adam Donowitz

A soon-to-be teenager marked his passage to young adulthood with a commitment to give kids a better childhood.

When I sat down to decide what my mitzvah project would be, I was inspired by my family. So many people in my family have spent their lives helping children, and I realized I wanted my mitzvah project to do that too. Continue reading

Head Start Students Get Surprise Visit from World-Renowned Chef

Our Head Start students are no strangers to exciting visitors. Last year, the world-famous red monster Elmo dropped by. And in 2015, our Head Start students in Corona began the holiday season with a visit from then-New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales, Assembly Member Jeffrion Aubry, and U.S. Congressman Joe Crowley.

But yesterday marked the first time our preschoolers were able to spend time with an internationally renowned chef. Continue reading
